VMFA Sculpture Garden Renovation

Located at the cultural heart of Richmond, the VMFA Sculpture Garden is one of the region’s most celebrated public spaces, welcoming visitors year-round for gathering, reflection, and engagement with art and landscape. Over time, several of the garden’s defining features began showing signs of deterioration, requiring targeted interventions that preserved the character of the space while addressing long-term maintenance concerns.

Working under VMFA’s term contract, Fall Line led the restoration of the Belvedere Stairs, Stair Fountains, Belvedere Fountain, and other site elements throughout the garden. The design approach focused on preserving original design intent while integrating repairs and upgrades that improve durability and long-term performance.

Approved by the Department of General Services and awarded $500,000 under budget, the project extends the life of one of Richmond’s most cherished public landscapes, ensuring visitors can continue to experience the unique relationship between art, culture, and community that defines the VMFA Sculpture Garden.
