A Richmond-based landscape architecture practice creating places of meaning, connection, and discovery.

A newly formed design firm creating meaningful open space utilizing informed design into built-form.

APPROACH

Fall Line is a SWaM Certified (Small/Micro: #811685) landscape architecture practice centered around the act of creation. We believe meaningful places are not the product of ideas alone, but of the continual practice of bringing those ideas into the world. Through curiosity, collaboration, and technical rigor, we practice bringing ideas into the world—creating landscapes where meaning, connection, and discovery can emerge.

PROCESS

Every project begins with understanding people before drawing places. Through listening, observation, and collaboration, we seek to understand our clients’ aspirations, project constraints, and the experiences they hope to create. Identifying key decision-makers at the outset helps establish shared goals and ensures the right voices are part of the conversation.

Whenever possible, these conversations take place on-site following inventory and analysis, allowing the character of the landscape itself to inform the project vision. Together, these observations and conversations establish the foundation for the design decisions that follow.

Constraints are not obstacles to creation—they sharpen it. Budget, constructibility, maintenance, and operational realities provide the framework through which thoughtful ideas become enduring places. By embracing these realities early, design vision and implementation remain aligned from concept through construction.

Complex projects require integrated thinking. We collaborate closely with architects, engineers, artists, contractors, owners, and other partners throughout the design process, allowing different perspectives and areas of expertise to contribute toward a cohesive whole.

OUTCOME

Successful landscapes are measured not only by how they perform on opening day, but by the lives they continue to support over time. We routinely return to completed projects to observe how weathering, maintenance, ecology, and human use influence the places we create.

That process of observation is part of our practice. Each project becomes an opportunity to learn—deepening our understanding of how landscapes endure, adapt, and support gathering, discovery, reflection, and belonging. What we learn informs what we create next.
