Located adjacent to VMFA’s Best Café, the reflecting fountain serves as one of the museum’s defining public spaces and provides the setting for Dale Chihuly’s iconic Red Reeds installation. Over time, waterproofing failures within the fountain began allowing water infiltration into the museum below, threatening both the fountain’s performance and the long-term integrity of this important public space. Through detailed investigation of original construction documents, site observations, and existing conditions, Fall Line developed a comprehensive restoration strategy to address the underlying deficiencies.
The design carefully coordinated repairs to the structure, waterproofing, stonework, and tile surfaces while preserving the visual character for one of Richmond’s most recognizable works of public art.
