Located within one of Richmond’s most rapidly evolving districts, VCU’s Athletic Village represents a growing destination where athletics, recreation, entertainment, and community life converge. As the district expanded, the University sought a comprehensive framework to guide future development while establishing a cohesive identity across multiple phases.
Rather than focusing on a single project, Fall Line developed a long-term vision and pattern language for the district. The master plan established a coordinated palette of paving, lighting, site furnishings, landscape treatments, gathering spaces, and pedestrian amenities that can be implemented over time. This flexible toolkit allows projects to evolve independently while contributing to a unified campus experience.
The master plan also prioritized the public realm as a place for people, introducing opportunities for active recreation, informal gathering, and pedestrian connectivity. The resulting vision provides VCU with both a roadmap for phased implementation and a framework for cultivating an active, connected district.

The replacement of Sports Backers Stadium marked the first major implementation phase of VCU’s Athletic Village and helped establish the district’s identity as redevelopment accelerated throughout the surrounding area. Located adjacent to the future Diamond District, the project transformed a highly visible site along Hermitage Road while translating the Athletic Village Master Plan into a built reality.
The project included two practice fields, a competition field, and a new stadium complex supported by a network of pedestrian walkways, gathering spaces, and landscape improvements. Amenity plazas, enhanced site lighting, shade trees, and enriched planting areas created a welcoming environment for athletes, students, and visitors while strengthening connectivity throughout the district.
Memorial tree plantings and iconic gateway signage establish a memorable sense of arrival, reinforcing the Athletic Village as a growing destination for athletics, recreation, and community life.
